[video] Sober (House/Wilson, House/Cuddy)
download (85MB, wmv)
title: Sober
pairings: House/Wilson, House/Cuddy
song: "Sober" by Tool
duration: 4;25
summary: Wilson in Half-Wit: "How depressed are you?" A video about House's depression. A companion vid to 'Passive'.
[0;05 - 0;17] I chose this footage to open the vid because depression is like being trapped in a prison. A dark, lonely place.
[0;31 - 0;35] 'There's a shadow just behind me, shrouding every step I take'. I love how weighted House's walk is in this scene. I know it's a scene that gets used a lot in vids, but it's such a good angle. Captures his limp really well.
[0;36] 'Making every promise empty' - House's bitterness towards his infarction, and how little in life he enjoys. Every promise is empty to him because he's like, 'what's the point?'
[0;40] I chose this because it not only focuses on his fingers, it focuses on his drug use - people, particularly Cuddy and Wilson - are often on his case about his drug use, blaming him for being irresponsible with his pain killers.
[0;57 - 1;08] This 'angry' montage is House basically saying, "I wish I knew why this shit happens to me - if there was a God, I'd demand an answer".
[1;09] Here, House is 'dealing' with his depression by drowning it in drugs and alcohol. In a way, he's self-medicating, but in another way, he's just trying to escape how depressed he is. I really like how this part turned out - really gritty and dark.
[1;48] "I am just a worthless liar" - I chose the scene with him saying, "I love you" to Wilson because the things he says are either often not true, or mean something other than what he's saying. He lies to himself, too, about his condition; he's in denial that he has a problem and refuses to face himself.
[1;51] "I am just an imbecile" - I interpreted the lyrics here to mean his self-esteem, which is also why I chose the scene of him clutching his leg with his pants down. It's a really sad, pathetic image of him and I think it encapsulates how he feels about himself really well.
[1;54] His issues are so big that they bleed over into Wilson and Cuddy's life. He makes their lives complicated because of his issues (among other things).
[1;57] One thing House does is he hurts the people he's closest to. Wilson and Cuddy trust him, but the price of that trust is that he knows exactly where to hurt them, too.
[2;00 - 2;13] The rest of this segment is about the manipulative, hurtful ways he can treat Cuddy and Wilson. He has so much self-loathing that he often doesn't know how to be anything but abrasive towards them both.
[2;14 ] Another montage of House dealing with his depression - by inflicting pain on himself. And the scene of him vomiting portrays him not looking after himself.
[2;47] The focus on the word 'depression', and then a few shots later, 'acceptance'. He doesn't want to accept the stuff that's happened to him, which is one of the things that holds him back and keeps him stuck in one place for so many years. Also, the word 'acceptance' could focus on the fact that if House accepted he has depression and actually dealt with it, he'd be much better off, but alas.
[2;51 - 3;35] I like the way this whole segment turned out, with the warped colours. Lol nothing else to say about these parts here - they're pretty much self-explanatory.
[3;36] Another montage showing how House deals with his depression: through what appears to be almost suicidal tendecies.
[4;01] This all ties back to the beginning, with House in a prison. Again, the prison cell represents House's depression and this time it shows Wilson and Cuddy looking in on him as he struggles with it. They are there for him and they want to help him, but he keeps himself enclosed in his own prison cell.
there's a shadow just behind me
shrouding every step i take
making every promise empty
pointing every finger at me
waiting like a stalking butler
who upon the finger rests
murder now, the path that must be
just because the son has come
jesus, won't you fucking whistle
something but the past and done?
jesus, won't you fucking whistle
something but the past and done?
why can't we not be sober?
i just want to start this over
and why can't we drink forever?
i just want to start this over
i am just a worthless liar
i am just an imbecile
i will only complicate you
trust in me and fall as well
i will find a center in you
i will chew it up and leave
i will work to elevate you
just enough to bring you down
mother mary, won't you whisper?
something bout what's past and done
mother mary, won't you whisper?
something bout what's past and done
why can't we not be sober?
i just want to start this over
and why can't we sleep forever?
i just want to start this over
why?

The subtle flashes of light were great in this, and you know, I really like the colors you used. It looks irritated, like a pink, infected wound (okay, gross, but you know what I mean).
I chose this because it not only focuses on his fingers, it focuses on his drug use
^ I totally noticed the fingers. You're good at making me notice certain things in your vids I wouldn't have noticed otherwise in any average viewing. By the way (any time you wanna pick up that side career as a film editor).
Awesome when paired with 'Passive.' :)

OMG THIS IS SO GOOD.
You make a film student like me bow at your foot.
I can't tell what kind of vidding program you use though. It's not Final Cut is it? And it's definitely not WMM.... What is it?

How long does it take you to make a vid?

And yes! I wanted to give a kind of pulse/heartbeat effect with the pulsing, faint light.
Thanks so much for watching ♥♥

There were two parts that really, really stuck out to me as magnificent. And they were both transitions. The first one--my favorite part in the whole vid--was the seamless transition from House's face when he was lying in bed in No Reason to a shot of his face in bed in 97 Seconds. Unspeakably gorgeous editing there. And I also really like near the end, where there's a shot of him looking up, and it cuts to a shot of Wilson and Cuddy standing outside the jail cell.
Loved the pulses of light. And the first montage was also really great. Loved that one. And the rest, but especially that one. =DDD
